Editorial Photographer Leeds & Yorkshire

Natural, Story-Led Editorial Photography

I’m a Leeds-based editorial photographer working with magazines, newspapers, journalists, PR agencies and organisations across Yorkshire and throughout the UK.

My photography is typically centred around authentic, natural images with a strong human connection. This approach works particularly well for editorial photography, where the images have an important role to play in bringing a story to life, adding personality, context and atmosphere to the accompanying words.

From environmental portraits and lifestyle features to documentary photography and longer visual stories, I aim to create photographs that feel genuine and help communicate the story behind the subject.

Editorial Photography Across Yorkshire And Beyond

I’m based in Leeds and regularly work throughout Yorkshire, including Bradford, Wakefield, York, Sheffield and the surrounding areas. I’m also available for editorial commissions across the UK. If you’re looking for a photographer who can bring a natural, thoughtful approach to your next feature, get in touch – I’d be interested to hear about the story you’re working on.

Editorial Photography That Tells A Story

Good editorial photography should do more than simply illustrate an article. It should add something to the story. I like to understand what a feature is about and what the photographs need to communicate before picking up my camera. Whether I’m photographing a person, place or activity, I look for the moments, details and surroundings that help tell the story naturally.

My approach is influenced by documentary photography, allowing people to be themselves and capturing genuine moments wherever possible. For portraits, I’ll offer direction when needed, but I always want the finished images to feel relaxed and authentic rather than overly staged.

Photography With Editors And Designers In Mind

Having worked as a designer for many years, I understand how photographs need to work within different layouts and formats. Wherever possible, I’ll capture a variety of compositions, orientations and framing options, including images with space for headlines or editorial copy, giving editors and designers the flexibility they need for print, digital and social media.

A Relaxed, Collaborative Approach

Editorial assignments often involve working with people who aren’t accustomed to being photographed, sometimes within fairly limited timeframes.

I take a relaxed, friendly approach, helping people feel comfortable while working efficiently to capture what the brief requires. I enjoy collaborating with journalists, editors and art directors, but I’m equally comfortable working independently on location.

I also understand the importance of deadlines. Images are carefully edited and delivered digitally, with faster turnaround or same-day selections available when arranged in advance.

Whether it’s a straightforward editorial portrait or a more involved assignment, I aim to make the process as easy as possible for everyone involved.

I’ve shot editorial photography for a number of clients including Der Spiegel, Moët Hennessy, British Rowing, SMEG UK, TLG, Sense, The Migraine Trust, BHT Early Education & Training, Avery Healthcare, DermaVigour, Hill Engineering, Hudgell Solicitors, Hunter Safety Solutions, Klick Technology, Mobile Mini, Care Home Professional Magazine, Robins Mill, Tower Growth Management and Primary Futures

He understood our brief fully and was creative with the shots he took, providing us with a range of really striking photos. We love them – Thanks Simon!”

Editorial Photography FAQs

What Types Of Editorial Photography Do You Undertake?

I photograph a wide range of editorial subjects, including environmental portraits, magazine features, lifestyle photography, interiors, people at work and documentary-style assignments. I’m particularly interested in photography that tells a story, whether that’s through a single portrait or a wider collection of images.

Can You Work From An Editorial Brief Or Shot List?

Absolutely. I’m happy to work from a detailed brief, collaborate with an editor or art director, or take a more independent approach where there’s room to explore the story visually. I’ll always aim to understand the purpose of the feature and how the photographs will be used before the shoot.

How Quickly Can You Deliver Editorial Photographs?

Turnaround depends on the size and nature of the assignment, but I understand that editorial deadlines can be tight. I can provide a faster turnaround or same-day selections where required, provided this is discussed and agreed in advance.

Do You Provide Different Image Orientations And Compositions?

Yes. Wherever possible, I’ll capture a range of landscape and portrait compositions, along with variations in framing and images with negative space for editorial copy. My background in design means I’m particularly conscious of how photographs need to work within different layouts.

Do you have insurance?

Yes, Simon Wiffen Photography holds Public Liability Insurance for £2 million.

What Usage Rights Are Included With Editorial Photography?

When I provide the images to you I’ll grant your company licence to use the images for marketing, PR and editorial use for as long as you need for no additional cost. If any other companies wish to use the images for their own publicity or marketing purposes I’ll charge them a reproduction fee. I’ll retain the copyright to all images and retain the right to use them for my own promotional purposes.

Do You Undertake Editorial Assignments Outside Yorkshire?

Yes. Although I’m based in Leeds and regularly work throughout Yorkshire, I am willing to travel. Travel requirements and any associated costs can be discussed when planning the commission.

Do you have an upcoming editorial photography requirement you’d like to discuss?

To discuss a project please give me a call or drop me an email and I’d be happy to talk through some ideas. I’d love to work with you!
