Through beautiful, thoughtfully curated video courses, Create Academy give unprecedented access to the expertise of today’s leading figures in food, interiors, gardening and craft.
They got in touch needing a range of lifestyle and portrait photography to support their upcoming ‘Introduction to Resourceful Interior Styling‘ course they were filming with interiors blogger, writer and stylist Lisa Dawson.
Lifestyle and Portrait photography requirements
The requirement was to deliver a number of key hero shots – both environmental portraits of Lisa herself but also interior shots that would be used across their website and advertising channels.
In addition, I was tasked with shooting a range of detail shots that would tie in with key lessons from the course. Photographs were required to support specific locations, details and techniques covered by the course content.

Working in tandem with the video production team
Photography was booked in on the last day of a four day shooting schedule for the course. Because filming was still taking place it was imperative that I worked closely with the Producer and Director of Photography to ensure I was able to capture the images needed without impacting the recording schedule.

As filming was taking place across a number of rooms in the house we co-ordinated the shoot so I was able to set up environmental portraits and full room shots while the filmmakers were setting up and filming in other rooms.

Both filming and photography required a number of costume changes for Lisa so we worked together to ensure her time was used efficiently with me aiming to wrap up my shots with her before her filming commitments began in each room.
I was then free to concentrate on full room and detail shots while Lisa was tied up with filming duties.

Supporting course video content with photography
In the course, Lisa shares advice for decorating sustainably and resourcefully – from repurposing furniture and making the most of what you already have to seeking out vintage pieces on a budget.
The various lessons cover practical decorating tips for small spaces, where to buy affordable art, outdoor styling ideas, ways to update your kitchen without having a costly refit and how to create a gallery wall amongst other topics.

It was imperative that the supporting photography not only showcases the various rooms covered, but also highlight some of the specific techniques and details covered in the course content. The variety of shots needed made this a fantastic project to work on.
