Capturing family memories is important… and worth waiting for

This family photography session was a long time coming, but well worth the wait.

Sarai originally got in touch because her and her husband had missed out on booking a photographer due to the pandemic and were keen to capture some memories before their 16 month old daughter completed her transition from baby to toddler.

It may have taken a while, but it was a pleasure to finally meet up with Sarai and her family for a shoot.

Unfortunately some bitter winter weather and an unfortunate fall (and resulting cut on the face) led to further delays but eventually we managed to meet up at Oakwell Hall – one of my favourite little Yorkshire venues for a family shoot.

I’m always on the lookout for fleeting moments between parents and their children. Capturing these little interactions are so important but they’re over in a second so it’s important to always be ready to react.

It was well worth the wait. Amber and I got on really well. At one point I had to stop shooting entirely because she wouldn’t stop handing me presents she found on the floor. I didn’t mind though.

Putting subjects at ease (both big ones and little ones) is such an important part of family photography that sometimes it’s important to stop shooting and concentrate on letting them relax with you. You reap the benefits later on when they’re comfortable enough to show you their real selves.

I love this shot. Amber had been sat on the bench with a daffodil but dropped it and was gazing down at it, but too tired to hop down and grab it. There was a quiet tragedy in the whole scene while she contemplated what to do about it.

We had a fantastic session. We were blessed with gorgeous low morning sun. Shooting with strong back light can be tricky but when handled properly can result in really beautiful images. Amber completely forgot I was there and we were rewarded with some gorgeous, relaxed images .

“I love your photos! Thank you :)”

One of the last frames I captured as we were saying goodbye. Amber was happily walking the family dog, captured beautifully in the back light.
