The Legacy of Photography – Creating Work with Purpose

Oona, shot for Leeds Hospitals Charity Legacy Giving Campaign

As a photographer I’m always striving to create meaningful work with purpose. But how do you measure meaning? What constitutes purpose? How do you define the legacy of photography?

A fantastic thing happened to me recently while I was shooting a campaign that really got me thinking about the meaning and purpose of the photography I produce. What will my legacy of photography look like?

Shadow & Light Monthly #2

Shadow & Light is a list of curated photography stories, features, techniques, news and inspiration that I’ve come across this month.

This month sees stories about professional photographers shooting on toy cameras, sliced and diced cameras as art projects, portraits from the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and an incredible story about how one man photographed his own transplant team 17 years before they saved his life.

The Daily Express coverage of my cystic fibrosis book

Daily Express article discussing the book

I’m in today’s edition of the Daily Express newspaper here in the UK, talking about my book project.

The Daily Express came to visit us the other week to talk to me about my book 47 / A Life With Cystic Fibrosis, our lives as parents to a young boy with CF and the ongoing campaign for access to specialist CF medication here in the UK.

Nine Lives Saved – The Transplant Gallery exhibition at Leeds City Museum

The gallery launch attracted interest from the BBC, ITV and local press.

Be A Hero. Sign up to the organ donor register and be someone's hero

It’s been a real privilege to work with Hatch Communications and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust this week on Yorkshire’s ‘Be A Hero’ organ donation campaign.

Each one of us has the ability to save up to nine lives and this week I’ve been shooting portraits of nine inspiring individuals who have been gifted a second chance at life with an all-important organ transplant.

Rosie - An inspirational young athlete representing GB at the World Transplant Games 2019

This weekend I had the pleasure of meeting Rosie – an inspirational 9 year old girl who a few years ago was incredibly poorly with leukemia. After a successful bone marrow transplant she’s now fighting fit and training hard as she prepares to represent Great Britain at the World Transplant Games 2019 in Newcastle and Gateshead during 17-21st August 2019.

For the last 8 months I’ve been working on a personal photography project called ’47 / A Life With Cystic Fibrosis’ – a series of intimate portraits of people living with CF and offers an insight into their attitudes to life and their condition up to and beyond the median predicted survival rate of 47.
