Have you ever wondered what a natural family shoot is really like? This family photoshoot at Newmillerdam in Wakefield shows exactly how I work: relaxed, unposed and focused on real connection.
Below you’ll find a behind-the-scenes video, thoughts on why the small details help tell the big story, and a lovely review from the family.
Why Newmillerdam Is Perfect for Family Photography
Newmillerdam is one of my favourite Wakefield locations for a family photoshoot. Woodland paths, lakeside light and plenty of space for children to explore make it ideal for natural family photography. When kids can move, play and be curious, the photos feel honest and full of personality – exactly what most families really want from a family photoshoot.

From Studio Worries to Natural Smiles
I don’t have anything against studio shoots, I think there’s a place for them but for me, I just don’t believe they really capture children’s true, authentic personalities. How often do you all sit in a sterile white room?

Before we began, Dad told me they’d previously had a studio session and didn’t get what they’d hoped for – their youngest didn’t smile in any of the photos. He was worried we might need extra time this time around. I explained that an hour is usually more than enough outdoors because the environment does so much of the heavy lifting.

I always try and keep sessions fun and relaxed so noone really feels like they’re performing for me. It’s all about creating an environment where everyone can just relax and have fun. I’m also careful to suggest locations that offer a good variety of settings within a relatively small area so we don’t get too many tired legs!
The happier and more relaxed everyone is, the better the results. And that’s exactly what happened here. By the end, me and his little girl were like best friends – laughing, playing and exploring the whole way through – and we made a set of images that really feel like her.

Why the Small Details Matter (and How They Support Portraits)
Of course, my family shoots always include classic portraits, but storytelling lives in layers. The supporting shots – the tiny flower tucked into a dress, little fingers pointing at a ladybird, the in-between moments – give you the feeling of the day. These details don’t replace portraits; they work alongside them to build a richer, more authentic narrative you’ll love returning to.

“Amazing photographer. We had an amazing time with Simon and the output is unbelievably good. We have tried few other shoots and we were very comfortable with how Simon worked. Can’t wait for our next shoot with him to document our kids growing”
