Flipboard Photographer in Residence

I’m delighted to announce that I’m taking up the position of Photographer in Residence with Flipboard for Autumn/Fall 2023.

You may recall back in October I was interviewed by Flipboard as part of their Curator Spotlight series. There we discussed my love of photography and how I use Flipboard to curate my Shadow & Light magazine.

When I was asked to take up the position of Photographer in Residence for the next three months I jumped at the chance. I’m really looking forward to delving deeper and getting to know more people within Flipboard’s photography community.

A Good Time to Introduce Myself

If you’ve arrived here for the first time from Flipboard then welcome! This seems like a good time to quickly introduce myself, I’m Simon. Nice to meet you!

I’m an award-winning photographer based in Leeds, UK. I specialise in portrait, commercial, editorial, and events photography. I have a particular passion for capturing natural, documentary-style images with a strong human element and an emotional narrative. I won the first AP Unsung Hero Award for my book project 47 / A Life with Cystic Fibrosis.

My Work as a Photographer

You can read about some of the projects I’ve worked on but for a great introduction to the kind of work I love to shoot I’d suggest reading my blog post ‘The Legacy of Photography – Creating Work with Purpose‘. Here I wrote about a few of the projects I’m most proud of, and how they’re all connected.

I regularly shoot family photography and have a particular love of timeless black and white photography. Running backwards through trees with my camera in hand trying to keep children framed and in focus is my happy place.

I’m a Long-Standing Flipboard Lover

I’ve been a Flipboard user since around 2011 when I picked up my first iPad. I curate a magazine called Shadow & Light where I collect photography-related articles. I use this primarily as a way to collect things that grab my interest so I can go back and read them later but I also post a monthly Shadow & Light blog here on my website where I share my favourite articles from the Magazine each month. 

My New Role as Photographer in Residence at Flipboard

As Photographer in Residence I’ll be curating ‘The Shot’ newsletter each month where we explore the craft of photography. Be sure to subscribe if you haven’t already. I’m going to be getting more involved in The Photography Exchange, Flipboard’s community for photographers and I’ll also be advising Flipboard behind the scenes on all things photography. You’ll also be able to find me in the Flipboard Mastodon community talking all things photography. I’m really looking forward to getting to know more of you and finding out about the work you’re producing.
