A Pumpkin Picking Family Shoot

A few weeks ago Nadia got in touch enquiring about a family photoshoot and said “I really want to have pictures taken while pumpkin picking on a farm.” I knew just the place!

Shooting silhouettes against an incredible sea fret on the Yorkshire coast

Silhouette of a young girl running into the sea dragging a body board behind her

Earlier this summer I had the unexpected opportunity to capture an incredible sea fret during a family trip to the Yorkshire coast.

We arrived at Hunmanby Gap, just down from Filey on the Yorkshire coast, fairly early and we were greeted with a really interesting morning mist.

Family Photography session amongst the trees of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Family photography - Portrait of a mother, son and baby

A few months ago I had the pleasure of meeting up with Alix and her family for a family shoot at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

The family had adopted a large oak tree and it’s a location that’s very important to them so it was a real pleasure to shoot them as a family in one of their favourite places. Not least because their family had very recently grown by one!

This family photography session was a long time coming, but well worth the wait.

Sarai originally got in touch because her and her husband had missed out on booking a photographer due to the pandemic and were keen to capture some memories before their 16 month old daughter completed her transition from baby to toddler.

Shadow & Light is a list of curated photography stories, features, techniques, news and inspiration that I’ve come across this month.

In this month’s edition we visit a 1980s Brooklyn roller disco and look at Kodak’s brand new half frame camera. We discover the story behind the secret photographers of the Holocaust and look at Godox’s quirky new retro flashes.

Shooting a secret family photography session

This was a fun session to be involved with. I met up with Jamie and his three girls at Temple Newsam in Leeds behind their mum’s back for a secret session.

Capturing the unique bond between sisters

Fine art black and white photo of two sisters sitting in the sun

One of the key things I’m always looking for when shooting family photography is capturing the relationship and bond between family members.

How to deal with bad weather on a photoshoot

Finding some shelter from the rain under a tree

We always hope for fine weather for a shoot but sometimes the weather God’s choose not to play ball. In those situations it’s important you’re able to adapt to the conditions.
